Eiffel Tower closure caused by winter snowstorm

World Weather Post - Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 7:38

On Monday, a winter storm brought snow across Europe.

The Herald Tribune reports that a few centimeters of snow in Paris had the effect of forcing the closure of the Eiffel Tower. Not because of the snow amount, but because of the slippery conditions, which can be dangerous.

“We can’t put down salt because it’s metallic,” Eiffel Tower press officer Isabelle Esnous said. “We can’t use sand either … because it risks getting into the elevator (cogs).”

“The cold, she said, is no problem, but snow can be dangerous.”
