AccuWeather reports that “Neanderthal extinction was likely caused by competition with humans and not from climate change as some other research has suggested, according to a new study that was funded by the National Science Foundation International Research Fellowship Program and the EuroClimate and OMLL programs of the European Science Foundation.
Using archaeological and chronological data with high resolution paleoclimatic simulations, researchers have determined that neanderthals and anatomically modern humans (AMH) exploited similar niches and continued to do so in the absence of contact.
The research team concluded that the southerly contraction of the neanderthal range in southwestern Europe was not due to climate change or change in adaptation, but rather the competition with the concurrent AMH expansion that led to the eventual extinction of the neanderthals. “

Neanderthals WERE humans. “Anatomically modern humans” are, quite simply, Homo Sapiens Sapiens. There is ample evidence that proves that Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens lived together and competed for hunting gronuds, water springs and other findamentals.
Quite simply, Neanderthal were not as flexible to adapt to changing conditions and were eventually absorbed into Homo Sapiens.
Evidence: Australian Aborigenes.

I agree-Neandertals were human-the differences seen were possibly from either extreme age, in some cases, or rickets, if they lived during the ice age. Either way, they were physically superior to modern humans, as well as having a brain capacity greater than ours, so probably smarter than we are today. I think, as they lived on, their physiology changed somewhat due to changes in diet and sun exposure, hence vitamin-D availability.
