National Geographic reports on a new study by Vanderbilt University geologist Steven Goodbred and co-author Katherine Cagen of Harvard University.

Usually, tsunamis are caused by earthquakes in the ocean, which trigger enormous waves, such as the ones that devastated the shores of many countries bordering the Indian Ocean in December 2004. ” But meteorite strikes have also been known to spark the killer waves. “
