Typhoon Chan-Hom Hits Philippines, Kills 15

World Weather Post - Sunday, May 10, 2009, 9:50

Last Friday. Yahoo News published a Reuters report on typhoon Chan-Hom, which hit the Philippines and killed 15. In this part of the world, hurricanes are called typhoons and typically occur in the region of the Philippines or the China sea.

“Fifteen people were killed, including a 10-year-old girl, when a typhoon pounded the northern Philippines, triggering mudslides and tearing roofs off houses before weakening, officials said Friday.

Typhoon Chan-Hom, the fifth to hit the Philippines this year, destroyed roads and bridges and felled power lines in several provinces on the main island, Luzon.

Thirteen villagers were killed in landslides in northern Ifugao province, a mountainous area on Luzon famous for its rice terraces, Ifugao Governor Teodoro Baguilat told Reuters by phone.

Downgraded to a tropical storm, Chan-Hom crossed the northern Philippines early Friday and is now headed toward China.”
