This very popular YouTube video shows the incredible forces of nature. One tends to forget how dangerous the sea can be, especially in winter over the North Atlantic.

Many years ago while in the Navy the Destroyer I was on got caught up in a storm in the Gulf of Mexico. We had waves breaking over the bridge windows, the Captains Gig was torn off its mount and lost and the force of the wind/waves was so strong that the paint on the upper decks was peeled off. Not to mention that the crew was pretty seasick even though most of the crew members were old hands and had been to sea many times. The waves were HUGE, twenty or thirty feet at least and we bobbed around like a cork, just trying to keep the bow pointed into the waves was a real challenge.
