A haboob occurred south of Phoenix on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

“It was caused by a monsoonal thunderstorm,” said AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Mike Pigott.

The dust storm caused a car accident at milepost 214 on Interstate 10 and closed eastbound traffic lanes. Thirteen vehicles were involved in the accident which left 12 people injured, five of whom were taken to local hospitals.

“There was zero visibility 10 miles south of Phoenix,” said Accuweather.com Meteorologist Mark Mancuso.
