Rain and mudslides kill at least 6 in Rio de Janeiro state, leave up to 20 Brazilians missing

RIO DE JANEIRO — Heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro state caused mudslides that killed at least six people in the state Monday, adding to a toll of 15 dead in Rio and neighboring Minas Gerais state since the beginning of the year.

State officials said mud loosened by the rain swallowed about 10 houses in the town of Sapucaia. Five residents were confirmed dead by rescue crews that are still searching for survivors. The sixth victim died when a house collapsed nearby.
