If you’ve had your eyes on the sky in the Durban area today, you may have noticed a rainbow-like ring around it.
Newswatch has been inundated by queries from listeners about the phenomena.
We have touched base with the SA Weather Service, who say say it’s likely a “sun halo”.
Forecaster Mduduzi Mthembu has explained the halo is caused by the sun’s reflection on ice crystals and other microscopic particles in the clouds.
He says sun halos are fairly common when there are upper-level clouds, in this case cirrus clouds, which have ice crystals in them.
