The 2012 Winter Jam event, to take place in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., has been canceled due to the warm temperatures.

This year’s Winter Jam was scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. The event has taken place for 10 years.

The Winter Jam allows New York residents to try different winter sports at no charge. Families are able to try their hand at skiing, snowboarding, sledding and other activities. Vendors are also on hand to sell winter-related merchandise.

Warmer than average temperatures have prevented artificial snow making. Snow is needed for almost all of the scheduled events.

“The average January temperature for Central Park between Jan. 1-27, 2012, is 36.7 degrees F,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Edwards.

The average temperature for January in 2011 was 29.7 degrees.

Colder days are not in the forecast in the near future.

“The days leading into the weekend are only going to get warmer,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski. “The temperatures will be in the 50s Tuesday through Thursday.”
